Delete Your Account
How to permanently delete your Finding Horizons account and data
Last updated August 2026
Working draft
This page is a working draft and should be reviewed by qualified legal counsel before public launch.
1. Deleting From Inside the App
You can delete your account yourself, at any time, without contacting us:
Profile → Settings → Delete account
You will be asked to confirm twice — the second confirmation states plainly that there is no way to recover any of it. Once confirmed, deletion runs immediately.
2. Deleting Without the App
If you have already uninstalled the app, or cannot sign in, email privacy@findinghorizons.ca from the address associated with your account and ask for deletion.
We action these within 30 days and confirm by reply. We may ask you to confirm ownership of the email address — that check exists to stop someone else deleting your account, and nothing more.
3. What Is Deleted
Deletion removes your account and the data attached to it:
• Your sign-in identity and profile (name, bio, avatar image)
• Every saved place, collection, trip, itinerary, plan, side quest and booking
• Your imports and the files that came with them — screenshots, uploaded photos, and generated thumbnails
• Journals, notes, checklists, and budget entries
• Your Explorer DNA answers and preferences
• Push notification tokens and device records
Uploaded files are removed from storage as well as the database. An account deletion is not a hidden or deactivated account: the sign-in identity itself is destroyed, and the same email may sign up again later as a brand-new account.
4. What Is Kept, and Why
A minimal deletion record. We keep a dated record that a deletion happened, so we can demonstrate the request was honoured. It contains no travel data.
Anonymous community place data. If you contributed discoveries to the shared community layer, the place records themselves (name, coordinates, category — public venue information sourced from mapping providers) remain, because other travellers' maps depend on them. These records carry no identity: they are not linked to you, your account, or any personal identifier, and they cannot be traced back to you after deletion. You can stop contributing at any time before deleting, in Settings → Community → Share my discoveries.
Records we are legally required to keep. Purchase and tax records, where applicable law requires retention for a fixed period. These are held by the app stores and our payment processor as well as us.
Backups. Deleted data may persist in encrypted database backups for up to 30 days before those backups roll over. It is not accessible in the product during that window.
5. Subscriptions
Deleting your account does not cancel an active subscription. Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, not by us, and must be cancelled in the store that sold them:
• iOS: Settings → your name → Subscriptions
• Android: Google Play → Menu → Payments & subscriptions
Cancel first, then delete, or you may continue to be charged for a subscription attached to an account that no longer exists.
